The
GJSD Music Department is proud to announce the selection
of Elizabeth VanDenburgh to the New York State School
Music Association (NYSSMA) Conference All-State Symphonic
Band. This highly selective group will rehearse during the
76th Annual NYSSMA Conference in Rochester, New York from
December 1-4, culminating in a concert on December 4,
2011 at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester.
Elizabeth was selected based on her audition at the Spring
NYSSMA solo festival held in Canajoharie this past May. A
trumpet player since fifth grade, she performed Knudage
Riisager’s Concertino, scales, and a sight-reading
exercise all at Level VI, the most challenging level of
performance. Accompanying her on piano was her
grandmother, Mrs. Nancy VanDenburgh. For all her efforts
and preparation, she received a grade of 100, which
qualified her for consideration in the statewide group.
According to NYSSMA, over 6,500 students from New York
State auditioned for the All-State ensembles at 43 sites
throughout the state. From these evaluations, almost 900
students are selected to participate in one of the eight
performing groups, which include jazz, vocal, and
instrumental ensembles.
Andy LaCoppola, her band teacher at JHS, credits
Elizabeth’s musicianship, dedication, and work ethic for
her success. He also notes the extra coaching she received
from fellow trumpet player Matt Miller, a senior at JHS
who auditioned on the same piece two years ago. Elizabeth
is also an accomplished pianist and violinist.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Paul and Celia VanDenburgh of
Johnstown.
