21st
Century Community Learning Center
Provides Students in Grades Six through Eight with Academic Enrichment, New
Experiences and Life Skills
The Greater Johnstown School District has been awarded a
grant to operate the federally funded "Twenty-First
Century Community Learning Center After-School Program" at
Knox Junior High School. The program began on September
21, 2005 and is again operating in the 2008-09 school
year. The program is open to students in grades six
through eight within the district, free of charge. A
registration packet must be completed and returned to
the office of your child's school before he or she may
stay and participate.
What
are the program hours and how will my child get there if
he or she is in sixth grade?
For
the 2008-09 school year, the after-school program will
begin on September 22 and operate Monday through Friday,
in conjunction with the school calendar. The program
begins upon dismissal from school and ends at 5:15 p.m.
each day. For the 2008-09 school year, sixth-grade
students will be bused to Knox Junior High School, where
they will meet with the rest of the program in the school
cafeteria. Students at Glebe Street Elementary School will
be escorted over to Knox by a staff member. As there is no
bus service to take children home at the end of the
program, they will need to be picked up
by a parent, guardian or another designated person, or
allowed to walk home.
What
can the 21st Century Community Learning Center
After-School Program do for my child?
This after school program provides a safe and nurturing
environment beyond the regular school day where children can
participate in various activities that enhance academic,
social and emotional growth and development. While the
operation has specific goals, primarily serving students ages
11-15 who require an academic boost, the programs are open to
all students based on priorities, needs and accommodations.
Some of the daily activities include:
The program will expose students to a variety of other areas
that may include but are not limited to the following:
-
skill
development in computer and multi-media technology
-
appreciation and respect for differences in culture, race and
gender
-
personal
and civic responsibility
-
drug and
violence prevention
-
time-management and study skills
-
counseling
and character development
What will
students do once they arrive?
Upon arrival, students will be responsible for signing
themselves in. After signing in, all children will be provided
with a nutritious snack. After a snack, students will follow a
schedule of events for that particular day. Each day is a
different experience for the children. For example, in
December some students may be outside snowshoeing while others
are inside participating in one of the many clubs that
students will help organize and create.
Who runs
the after-school program?
The program is staffed with a variety of educational
professionals from the Greater Johnstown School District, as
well as other qualified professionals. The Site Coordinator
and Lead Teacher for this program is Ms Christine Everson. She
will be on-site at Knox Junior High School from 11 a.m. to 6
p.m., Monday through Friday. The Community Coordinator for
this program is Mr. Dave Sammons. Mr. Sammons will coordinate
activities within the community.
How
do I sign my child up?
Registration packets will be sent home. Or, to simply
download a registration form, please
registration packet as soon as possible to the main office
at your child's school. Please note that no child may stay
for the program unless a registration packet has been
completed and turned in.

21st Century Field
Day & Family Night
The
21st Century Community Learning Center
After-School Program held a field day and family night
at Knox Field on June 2, 2008 for students from programs
in Johnstown, Amsterdam, Fort Plain and Gloversville. Each student
attending the field day was treated to a new book bag
filled with a variety of
items.
A
number of fun events were offered, including tug of war,
a foul shooting contest, crazy kickball, water balloon
toss, Frisbee toss, football toss and jewelry making,
just to name a few. The Johnstown School Museum was also
open to students and parents for tours. Community groups
that worked with the students during the school year,
including members of ASAPP'S Promise, the Boy Scouts,
Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Girl Scouts, the
James A. Brennan Humane Society and the National Guard,
were on hand and staffing tables filled with
information.
