 Glebe
Street Elementary School’s first Walk & Bike to School
Week was an amazing success. Over the course of a mainly
gray and dreary week, hundreds of Glebe students and
families chose muscles over motors as they left their cars
at home in favor of some early morning exercise. Of our
325 students, 284 of them walked or biked to school at
least once, and 116 of them walked or biked every day!
Those 116 five-day participants were entered in a drawing
for a pair of beautiful new bicycles, donated by Walmart
of Johnstown and the great Glebe Street School PTA.
Congratulations to our bicycle winners: Jarred Dillenbeck
(third grade) and Abbie Levin (sixth grade)!
Congratulations
also to the winners of the “Safe Walking and Biking
Writing and Poster Contest” (see list posted below). The
first, second and third place winners in three age groups
earned gift cards and certificates to The Bike Works and
Walmart, to spend on their favorite fitness activities.
Many thanks to The Bike Works and the PTA for providing
those prizes, and a big thank you to our expert judges
from the Johnstown Police Department and Nathan Littauer
Hospital for making some very difficult choices in
selecting the deserving winners. These posters and essays
will now be displayed at the Johnstown Police Station and
City Hall.
 Special
thanks to our friends at the Johnstown Police Department
and our new friends at Nathan Littauer Hospital and Fulton
County Public Health. These important community
organizations helped in every phase of this great week,
and we couldn’t have done it without them.
Finally, just because Walk & Bike to School Week may be
finished doesn’t mean that we can’t continue to start our
days in this healthy way. Let’s keep on walking and biking
straight into summer!
