 Character Education

What Is Character Ed, Anyhow?Character Ed Pillars
Character education involves teaching children about basic human values including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, equality, and respect.

The goal is to raise children to become morally responsible, self-disciplined citizens. Problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution are important parts of developing moral character. Through role playing and discussions, students can see that their decisions affect other people and things.

The State Legislature and the Governor enacted a law in 2001 that requires instruction in civility, citizenship and character education. The Greater Johnstown School District and Glebe Street Elementary School strive to comply with State law and continuously work to further develop and strengthen the character education program.

The Glebe Shared Decision Making team has adopted the "six pillars" model for its character education program. Those very pillars that support the character building that we strive for are represented through colors and positive character traits (Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship). All six pillars combined represent Panther Pride.

The picture above shows our newly encased structural pillars that represent the positive character traits (pillars) that we work so hard to model each day at Glebe Street Elementary School.
