Dear Families,
We hope to see you this month at Glebe! It is hard to
believe it is May already. During the last two months of
school valuable instruction is planned- with a bunch of
fun on the side! As with the end of every year we are
trying to schedule a variety of events and fun activities
for students. Some important dates to keep in mind
include; The 4-6th grade track meet will be Thursday, June
6th (rain date June 10th). Field Day will be June 17th
(rain date June 19th). The End of Year Awards Assembly
will be on June 20th at 9:30 a.m. Lastly, join me as we
celebrate Grade 6 Graduation which will be held June 21st
at 9:30 a.m. Just a reminder- we have a half day on May
2nd and we do not have school on May 27th in observance of
Memorial Day.
This month we will celebrate reading with our Read-A-Lot-Athon.
Students will have an opportunity to earn pledges, read,
read, read, and record time spent reading. Students can
earn books daily for getting caught reading. More
information will be coming home soon!
Lastly, please remember while school is in session, the
playground is closed to the community. The playground is
open each day at 3:20 after all of our students have been
safely dismissed. Thank you for your help in keeping all
of our students safe!
We hope to see you soon at Glebe!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Abbey North, Principal
Dear Families,
I was hoping to
wish you happy spring- but with snow on the ground- that
makes it tough. Soon enough we will be outside enjoying
the sunshine! I hope everyone enjoyed spring break and is
ready for the last quarter of school. Third quarter report
cards will be distributed on April 19th.
As we return from spring break we welcome the NYS tests in
ELA and Math for grades 3-6. The ELA tests will be given
April 16th-18th and the Math tests will be given the 24th
-26th. Schedules have been changed for these two weeks to
accommodate the NYS testing timeframes for all students.
Students may have specials on different days. After the
two weeks of testing- schedules will be back to normal!
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
In this home stretch of the school year several
opportunities remain for students to express their
creativity, and I hope you will join me in encouraging and
supporting your child’s participation in the Talent Show,
the Academic Fair, and the Read-A-Lot-A-Thon, and
Agricultural Awareness Day, among others.
We hope to see you this month at Glebe!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Abbey North, Principal
Dear Families,
Happy March! Time surely flies! We have a busy month
planned at Glebe!
The after school enrichment clubs will begin the week of
March 4th. We have over 120 students participating in
these clubs. Thank you again to the PTA for funding these
clubs and a huge thank you to the volunteers serving as
Enrichment Leaders!
The NYS Tests will be given to students in grades 3-6 on
April 16, 17, 18 (ELA) and 24, 25, 26 (Math). Testing will
begin at 9:15 a.m. Please be sure students are well
rested, eat a good breakfast, and arrive to school
on-time. If your child is sick, please do not send them to
school. If they are not feeling their best, the test may
not be an accurate reflection of their ability. We do have
a small make-up window for testing. I will be offering an
evening session that explains the new Common Core State
Standards and NYS testing in Math and ELA on MARCH 21st at
6 p.m. The presentation will last about 45 minutes. The
content will be centered around grades 3-6 but parents of
students of all ages are welcome! We will meet in the
library. Please do NOT bring your child to this
informational session.
There will be no school on March 8th and there will be
half day on March 21st. There will be no school on Good
Friday- March 29th and students will have spring recess
April 1-5. School resumes on Monday, April 8th.
If you need to register a child for Pre-K please call
Warren Street Elementary School at 762-3715. If you need
to register a child for Kindergarten please call the
district office as soon as possible at 762-4611.
The end of this month marks the end of the third quarter
and the weather is getting nicer! Report cards will be
going home on April 19th. Be sure to contact your child’s
teacher with questions or concerns you may have regarding
your child’s progress. As the weather gets nicer we have
an increase in the number of students walking or biking to
school. If your child is walking to school – please remind
him/her to stay on the sidewalk. If your child is riding a
bike to school, it is against the law for him/her to be
riding without a helmet. We hope everyone has a healthy
and happy spring! We look forward to seeing you at the
elementary school sometime this month!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Abbey North, Principal
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that it is February already! As we
approach our 100th Day of School- this means the school
year is half way over! I have reminded students to
continue working hard. I am proud of their success so far
this school year.
A topic that continues to be on everyone’s mind is that of
school safety. I wanted to take this opportunity to
provide you with some updates. First and foremost, your
child’s safety is my number one priority. If your child
does not feel safe in school, they cannot learn. You may
have noticed that we now have a camera/buzzer system.
Please press the silver button and let us know your name &
why you are here and we will let you in. All visitors are
asked to report directly to the Main Office. All doors
will remain locked throughout the day- this includes
classroom doors. Although classroom doors can be open, the
handle should always remain locked. We will continue to
use our sign in/out procedures at the main office and we
will issue stickers to visitors. I have started to visit
classrooms to explain to students why we will need to
practice other safety drills. You will receive a letter
from me the day of each drill- informing you of the drill
we practiced. I will continue to work with the other
building principals in the district to ensure the safety
of your children while in school. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Abbey North, Principal

Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you had the opportunity over
vacation to spend time with friends and family! I enjoyed
time with my soon to be 3 year old son- sledding, building
forts, reading, and playing! Most kids work best with a
schedule- so it is great that we are back in the swing of
things here at Glebe.

school safety. I wanted to take this opportunity to

child’s safety is my number one priority. If your child
does not feel safe in school, they cannot learn.
You may have noticed that we now have a doorbell at the
front door that you can use to alert us that you need to
get inside. Mrs. Ermie, Mrs. Ruggeri, or myself will come
to the door to greet you. The camera/buzzer system will be
installed soon. All doors will remain locked throughout
the day- this includes classroom doors. Although classroom
doors can be open, the handle should always remain locked.
We will continue to use our sign in/out procedures at the
main office and we will issue stickers to visitors. Our
building safety team will be meeting next week to review
all lockdown and lockout procedures. I will then visit
each classroom and explain to students why we will need to

Dear Families,
We were excited to see so many of you at Parent-Teacher
Conferences. It is important that you and your child’s
teacher communicate so that together, you can help develop
their pathway to success. When we see highly interested
and involved parents, we see highly interested and
involved students.
Parents, it is very important that when your child is
absent from school that you call our office to inform us
by 9:00 a.m. at 762-3714. If there is no call from a
parent, we must ensure the safety of the child by
contacting you. If your child is absent, please send in an
excuse upon their return to school.
As always, we have a busy month planned here at Glebe! On
December 5th we have Santa’s Workshop. Children will be
able to make gifts for family and friends at the workshop.
The PTA has plenty of creative, fun, and wonderful
gift-giving ideas that the kids can make—and give– as
presents during the season!
The PTA Book Fair will run December 5-7. Our annual
Hanging of the Greens will take place at 2:15 p.m. on
Friday, December 7th. We would love for you to join us for
the Winter Band and Chorus Concert on the 11th. Students
will perform at Glebe at 9:30 am and at the JHS
Performance Arts Center at 7 p.m. that evening.
I hope that you enjoy the holiday season and have the
opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. I am
very grateful to work in such a wonderful school with
dedicated teachers and great students and families. I wish
you good health and happiness for 2013.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Abbey North, Principal

Dear Families:
It
is hard to believe it is November already. First quarter
has come to an end! Just a reminder that we do not have
school on November 9th, 12th, 22nd, or 23rd. Students will
have a half day on the 15th and on
Wednesday, November 21st students will be dismissed 15
minutes early (2:55).
Students are to leave the building promptly and go
directly home or to their designated location. School
personnel will also be asked to “Go Home”. It is very
important that you make arrangements for your children to
be picked up on time.
You will be receiving your child’s report card at
Parent-Teacher Conferences. Recently you received your
child’s STAR test report. The STAR test is a computer
adaptive test that gives us information on how your child
is progressing in reading and math. Depending on if your
child answers the question correctly – the questions will
either get harder or easier. We will be giving the
assessment three times per year to all students and using
the STAR test more frequently to progress monitor students
receiving extra help in AIS. Your child’s STAR testing
data is not the only piece of information we take into
account when planning the best possible instruction for
your child. When we are making decisions we also take into
consideration- state test performance, classroom
observations, learning challenges, and classroom test
performance. The teachers and staff at Glebe will continue
to work together to plan the best possible programs for
your child (ren) - whether that be for extra help or for
enrichment! If you have questions about your child’s STAR
test report, please ask your child’s teacher at conference
time!
I hope you have a wonderful November. We hope to see you
soon at Glebe!!

Dear Families:
It was wonderful to see so many of you at Open House last
week. My first two weeks at Glebe have flown by. I am
fortunate to have great teachers and staff members,
wonderful families, and awesome students! We have many
activities coming up this month that will be fun for the
whole family!
I spoke about the new Common Core State Standards at Open
House and I want to be sure you have the resources you
need so we can communicate about your child’s progress
toward meeting grade level expectations. You can access
the standards online at:
http://www.nysed.gov. The number one thing you can do
as a parent to help your child succeed is READ! Research
shows that children who read at home with parents do
better in school. It helps when parents:
-
Keep reading materials handy- magazines, books, and
newspapers.
-
Let children read aloud and discuss materials. You can
take turns reading too!
-
Talk about books, including plot, setting, characters,
and your child’s reactions to them.
-
Tell pretend and real-life stories. Choose topics your
child relates to, including family history.
-
Point out words everywhere you go, such as on signs and
food packages.
-
Set a good example by reading every day. Say how
worthwhile and fun it is!
-
To help your child become a stronger reader- encourage
your child to re-tell stories, describe the pictures to
you, ask your child questions about the stories he/she
reads, and listen when your child reads.
-
Finally- create a comfortable place for your child to
read at home!
Our first Accelerated Reader Night will be October 23rd at
6:30 p.m. See you there!
I hope you have a wonderful October & we hope to see you
soon at Glebe!

Dear
Families,
Thank you for a great first week at Glebe! I am looking
forward to seeing you at Open House next Thursday. The
format has changed slightly. I will be meeting with K-2
students and families at 6 pm in the gym, and then
students and families will have time to visit in
classrooms until 6:45. At 6:45- I will be addressing
students and families in grades 3-6 in the gym, and then
you will have time to visit classrooms until 7:30.
We have many exciting activities happening soon. I plan to
send you home a monthly newsletter and calendar the first
week of every month. Be looking for my first newsletter
next week! For students who took the 2012 NYS exams, the
parent reports are in! You will be receiving them next
week. If you have questions or suggestions- feel free to
call, email, or stop in!

Dear
Glebe Street Elementary Families,
I am honored to be selected as the new Glebe Street
Elementary Principal. I look forward to a wonderful year
of learning and fun! I am going to use this opportunity to
tell you about myself. Currently I am the Assistant
Principal and Special Education Chairperson at Mayfield
Elementary School. I attended Oswego State University
where I earned my BS in Elementary Education and English.
I then attended SUNY Albany for my MS in Educational
Administration and Policy Studies. I also have experience
as a classroom teacher in second and third grade. I live
with my husband, our son, and dog in Rock City Falls. We
are looking forward to becoming a part of the Glebe Street
community.
This year our teachers will be facing new challenges
including teaching to the new Common Core State Standards.
In addition, they will be working under a new APPR (Annual
Professional Performance Review). We will be working as a
team to prepare your child(ren) to be successful! I want
to take a moment to share with you my expectations of our
students. My expectations for students include:
1. Work hard every day, all day!
2. Respect yourself and others.
3. Take pride in your work, have pride in your school!
In return, you can expect me to: listen to your concerns,
address any problems that may arise, communicate with you,
be present, help our teachers, and most importantly- make
school & learning fun! My first official day with you will
be September 24, 2012. I eagerly await our “first” day
together. I look forward to meeting each and every family
and working collaboratively for a successful school year!
