Flat-tops
& Poodle Skirts Back in Vogue for a Day
On April 28,
anyone walking the halls at Knox might have thought they
were taking a step back in time.
As
a culmination of historical studies of the 1950s, all
eighth grade students (and staff) were given the
opportunity to dress up in 50s style clothing. Hey
daddy-o, cast an eyeball on the threads worn by the
hipsters in these photos!

Seventh Graders Share Fables
with Glebe Kindergarten Students
On
Tuesday, April 12, 2011, both kindergarten classes from
Glebe Street Elementary were invited to Knox Junior High
School to work with the students in Mrs. Sweeney's
social studies classes and Mrs. Schuttenberg's English
classes.
 The
seventh grade students have been learning about myths,
fables and folktales in English class. In groups of two,
the seventh graders picked one of Aesop's fables,
created a poster to display the fable and developed
activities for the kindergarten students to complete
during their visit.
The
Knox students then paired up with the Glebe students,
read the fable to them and worked with them to complete
the activities. The
seventh graders will finish the unit by writing and
illustrating an original fable of their own. They will
present the fables in English class.
Pi (or pie) Day
Fun on March 14
Knox students and staff are encouraged to decorate
themselves with math-related symbols and designs for Pi
Day on March 14, 2011.
The day will include an assembly featuring computer and
projector presentations of 15 student-created projects
from Mr. Chamberlain's, Ms. Hart's and Ms. Landsberg's
math classes. During the assembly, several students will
also have the opportunity to toss pies at staff
volunteers.
For a chance to win a spot as a pie-thrower, students
should put positive reward tickets in a special
Pi/Pie box in the guidance office.
Banish Bullying! Puppeteer
Group Performance
The "Banish Bullying!"
program is an eight session curriculum provided to all
seventh grade students at Knox as part of the health
curriculum. After completing the program, many students
volunteer their after-school time to learn the puppet
script "The Creatures of Coral Castle in Banish
Bullying!" They then perform the puppet show at
Johnstown's elementary schools. This year, performances
will take place during the school day as follows:
January 19 at Glebe Street; January 21 at Pleasant
Avenue; and January 26 at Warren Street.
In addition to the elementary performances, there will
be a special presentation for parents and other adults
at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 27. Please mark the date on your calendar
and plan to attend to show your support for the
important message the students are sharing.
Many thanks to the following students for volunteering
their time as Peer Puppeteers for our Knox “Banish
Bullying!” program: Juliana Blair, Caliope Brower,
Alexia Brunetto, Mattie Clough, Emily Day, Korrin
DiMartino, Elli Doyle, McKayla Fancher, Alexis Fisher, Kaeleigh
Lozier, Megan Malagisi, Lindsey Salamack, Sara Shaffer, Elizabeth
Willett, and Cody Wood.
Storybook Contest Winners
Each year the Friends of the Johnstown Public Library sponsor a
contest encouraging Knox students to write and
illustrate a storybook that will appeal to children
between the ages of three and seven years of age. Once
again our Knox students were up for the challenge,
demonstrating creativity, hard work and enthusiasm!
Congratulations to the following 2010 winners: first

Petunia;" second place - Tyler Askew for "Ben Learns To
Swim;'" third place (a tie) - Jerica Holland for
