What is Accelerated Reading?
Accelerated Reading (AR) is a program developed to encourage, promote, and improve a student’s reading skills.

  • The student reads a library book or textbook series selection that is marked AR. Books are available at the Pleasant Avenue Library, Johnstown Public Library, or from the child's teacher. Children may also read their own books that are included on the AR list. *AR lists are available to all students and parents in the school library, as well as the public library. (View Pleasant's AR Book List).
  • After the book has been read, the student will sign into his or her account on the school computer to take a quiz about the book. Based on the level of the book and the number of correct answers, a point value will be given for the test.
  • Students will accumulate AR points and will be rewarded with different prizes based on each level they reach.

For the 2011-2012 school year, we will have a Reaching for the Stars display on the back wall of the stage in the cafeteria. Each AR level will be designated by a different constellation. When a student takes his or her first test, he or she will earn a star. This display will provide students with a way to show their progress to their families when we have events such as Open House, BINGO night, etc.

At the end of the year, there will be recognition/awards for the following:

  • Top reader from grade level
  • Top reader in the school

Star Colors
Each grade will be designated by a color. Each student will have their first name and last initial on their star. The grade colors are:

  • Kindergarten - Purple
  • First Grade – Light Blue
  • Second Grade - Orange
  • Third Grade - Yellow
  • Fourth Grade – Dark Blue
  • Fifth Grade – Light Green
  • Sixth Grade - Red
  • Toscano - Dark Green

Points
Points will be multiplied based on grade level as we have done in the past. Adjustments will be made according to the student’s ability, if enrolled in AIS services and/or at the discretion of the support staff. Points earned for grades K-3 will be multiplied by 5, and points earned for grades 4-6 will be multiplied by 3.

Prizes for Points Earned:
At the end of the year the following exciting prizes will be awarded to qualifying students:
\

Points Earned** Prize
25 Movie and Popcorn
50 Staff & Student Kickball Game
75 Staff Dunking Booth
125 Pool Party
200 Job Shadowing
300 Lunch with Mr. Vivenzio

**note these points are based on multiplied points

We will also be awarding students prizes after the first three quarters:

  • 25 points – a pencil
  • 50 points – a sticker or tattoo
  • 75 points – a homework pass

Accelerated Reader Rules

  • Students must take tests on their reading/grade level. Exceptions will be allowed if the student is enrolled in AIS, or at the discretion of the support staff. If the child takes a test lower than their accepted level, the test will be deleted and points removed.
  • Students in grades K, 1 & 2 will be allowed to retake a test one time. It will be the responsibility of the teacher to delete and allow for the retake.
  • In class audio books that are included in the reading series are acceptable for testing. Audio books listened to at home are NOT allowed. The purpose and goal of Accelerated Reading is to promote reading and reading comprehension.

Accelerated Reader Events
AR Nights are being planned throughout the year to help promote reading. There will also be several fundraisers to support the cost of prizes, programs, books and tests. Please continue to support the AR program and encourage every child to read.
